Honda spirit of generosity ignited by earthquake crises
The 22 February earthquake in Christchurch prompted Honda New Zealand to donate $100,000 to the Christchurch Mayoral Fund set up to help victims and rebuild the city. Soon after, Honda Japan donated ¥4,000,000 to the Red Cross in New Zealand, bringing the corporate contribution for the Christchurch earthquake to the equivalent of 10 million yen.
Honda New Zealand staff were motivated to raise additional funds that Honda New Zealand has matched creating another $5,500 for the Christchurch earthquake. The Honda dealership in Christchurch incurred damage from the earthquake and was initially closed, however its operations have returned to normal.
Following the tragic events of the Japan earthquake, Honda New Zealand staff have continued to give generously with a further $2,500 raised at Head Office and another $2,900 from Honda’s 30-strong Christchurch team.
“As the enormity of the devastation in Christchurch and Japan is revealed, it is wonderful to see our people’s desire to help those affected, especially from our Christchurch team who have experienced the trauma and destruction firsthand,” explains Honda New Zealand Managing Director, Graeme Seymour.
He continues, “While as businesses we can donate, when you see our staff contributing so generously it is extremely humbling. Honda New Zealand as an organisation will continue to look at other ways of helping our family and friends in their time of need, both here and in Japan.”
