IMA Boost

IMA Boost integrates Honda's dual engine system for a drive that can change between power and efficiency, giving the driver the choice between on-tap performance, or economy motoring.

IMA Boost allows the driver to select the characteristics of the IMA system's influence on the car, depending on the driver's needs and the environment that the car is being driven in.  By significantly altering the response of the car, the IMA Boost system allows drivers to select the appropriate mode for different traffic situations.

Sport Mode (CRZ) gives a turbo-like boost to the engine. It offers the response and torque that you would expect from a larger engine. Perfect for drivers wanting to enjoy the open road. The throttle and CVT response is sharpened and the IMA system provides more electric motor boost and increases the weighting of the electric power steering.

CRZ Driving Modes

Normal Mode (Jazz IMA, Insight, Civic IMA, CRZ) provides a good balance between performance, economy and emissions, and suits most driving situations.

Economy Mode (Jazz IMA, Insight, Civic IMA, CRZ) is perfect for driving in peak traffic conditions, or any time that you really want to save fuel and cut out emissions. This prioritises fuel economy in the operation of the drive-by-wire throttle, ECU, air conditioning and the IMA system.

Below is a comprehensive guide to show the effects of the IMA Boost on motoring.

The IMA system's components in the CRZ are shared with the Insight, but the control systems have been redeveloped for performance as the prime objective, Scramble Assist has been added, and it is designed to interact with the 3-mode drive system.

IMA Boost is Honda's dual motor technology that provides for multiple powertrain tuning depending on the drivers choice and actions.  Able to swap between turbo-like boost or frugal hybrid-style economy, Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system delivers a dynamic engine solution.

The IMA dual motor setup maximises the best characteristics of both a petrol engine and electric motor to increase performance or economy, depending on the situation.  An efficient petrol engine provides the best output at high revs, whilst electric gives peak output from start-up to about 3000 rpm where the petrol engine performance takes over.

CRZ Performance

In the manual CRZ, the electric motor boosts start-up torque to 174 Nm at just 1000 rpms - providing excellent initial acceleration.  The torque curve of the CRZ is unusually flat and high for a naturally aspirated engine, enabling great flexibility at all engine speeds. This allows for a higher gear selection without performance loss, and extended performance throughout the rev range.

A key feature of the CRZ's IMA Boost low-end torque is to give off-the-mark acceleration and a turbo-like feel minus the lag.  The boost of low-mid rev range torque suggests bringing the revs lower and maximising the electric boost which means you can drive in a higher gear than you normally would. This advantage is quickly apparent on combinations of corners and straights as power is available though a higher band of speeds and revs.  This reduces the gear changes required as the electric boost comes in at lower revs and the petrol engine delivers the power at high revs, making a smooth and controlled drive.
