The all new 2017 Honda Civic 5-door Hatch
A new class of Sports Premium 5-door Hatch
Powered by the award winning VTEC TURBO Engine
The Civic is Honda’s longest running and largest selling model globally offered today in over 170 markets around the world. The completely reimagined and reinvented new Civic is the sportiest ever and sets a benchmark for the compact class in terms of space, fuel efficiency, safety features, interior quality, and dynamic performance.
The all new Honda Civic 5-door Hatch was developed from the tenth-generation Civic as a premium-style sporty hatchback.
The Honda Civic 5-door Hatch exterior design shares the same platform as the new Civic Sedan. It features a sleek and swept back silhouette and articulates a fresh and distinctive new Honda design direction that conveys a strong, youthful and sporty character advancing the Civic design into the next era. Its windswept lines are complimented by the most comprehensive aerodynamic packaging of any Honda to date, including complete underbody panelling improving both fuel efficiency and cabin quietness.
From the B-pillars rearward the Civic 5-door Hatch is utterly unique. The rear roofline is taller than the Sedan’s to provide class leading cargo space, while the rear overhang is shorter, adding to the vehicle’s sportiness.
The athletic look starts with the longer, lower and wider proportions than the previous hatch, 130 mm longer, 30mm wider and 20 mm lower, creating a sleek roofline. The new wheels and tyres further emphasise the wide stance and sweeping cabin area and further add to the dynamic feel of the exterior.
Sporty and sophisticated design details include a shorter front overhang with distinctive air intakes on the front bumper and beehive grille. The high-tech front lamp clusters feature LED headlights and LED Daytime Running Lights. The sleek and swept back body contour lines continue along the flanks of the car, with a swage line which bisects the front and rear door handles before culminating in the distinctive Civic C-shaped LED tail lights. The rear bumper’s sharp creases and sculpted air outlets complete a dramatic look. The overall effect is a sleek, sophisticated, thoroughly modern Civic exterior design.
All variants of the Honda Civic Hatch will feature a body coloured upper tailgate spoiler and a black lower rear spoiler, along with Piano Black grille and a sports interior environment with dark roof lining and pillar trims in place of the contrasting lighter interior colour on the sedan.
The Civic RS Sport Turbo Hatch stands apart from the rest of the Hatch variants, as well as from the RS Sedan, with an assertive ‘Type R’ style centrally mounted twin exhaust system, finished with chrome exhaust outlets. In addition, the RS Hatch also has a full lower body kit in Piano Black encompassing a front under spoiler, side skirts and rear under spoiler, plus the RS dark chrome treatment for the exterior door handles.
The Honda Civic 5-door Hatch’s longer, wider platform and longer wheelbase also sees the hood lowered, resulting in improved forward and downward visibility. Thin A-pillars reduce the obstructed forward view. This also creates an open and airy feel to the cabin. Ergonomically-optimised front seats in a lower position are designed to provide higher levels of confidence and comfort when driving. Rear-seat passengers will appreciate front seats with a narrow upper profile and compact headrests that give the rear cabin a more open, airy feel.
The Honda Civic 5-door Hatch is set to continue the model’s reputation for providing class-leading practicality with unrivalled passenger and cargo space. High quality materials, a sophisticated design theme and new high quality digital instrument display provide a fresh, premium interior ambience.
The instrument panel houses a large tachometer flanked by a coolant temperature gauge on the left and fuel level gauge on the right. A digital speedometer is positioned in the centre of the tachometer. This instrument panel is reworked in a one piece design which provides greater knee room for the driver. The centre console is engineered around a “Tech Centre” theme. Up front, it has a two-tier smartphone tray with a wire management pass through for organised connectivity.
The interior of the all new Honda Civic 5-door Hatch offers a wider, comfortable cabin for all lifestyle requirements. The total storage capacity is up and the Hatch offers a 60:40 split foldable back seat. The entire back seat can be fully folded down to increase rear storage space further. The retractable cover can be pulled out from a side-mounted ‘cassette’ quickly and easily. When loading tall objects, the cover can simply be unclipped to retract back into the cassette.
The all new Civic 5-door Hatch is available in two different drivetrains – the new 1.5L DOHC VTEC Turbo Engine as well as an improved 1.8L i-VTEC normally aspirated petrol engine.
The Civic delivers an engaging drive and impressive handling benefiting from Honda’s Agile Handling Assist which has been developed to increase vehicle responsiveness and stability, offering drivers handling that is both exhilarating and secure. This brake vectoring technology was first developed for the Acura range including the NSX.
To realise the new system, the unique Honda Agile Handling Assist logic is incorporated in high-performance Vehicle Stability Assist. By contrast with VSA, which only goes into operation at the limit range, Agile Handling Assist operates across the daily use range, applying light braking force, unnoticeable to the driver, to the inner wheels when the steering wheel is turned, and to the outer wheels when the steering wheel is returned, in order to increase responsiveness and stability.
The Honda Civic RS Sport Turbo Hatch is powered by 1.5L DOHC VTEC Turbo Engine with a new Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). The engine provides 127kw at 5,500 rpm and maximum torque of 220 Nm at 1,700-5,500 rpm. With a direct injection, low-inertia Mono scroll turbo system with an electronic wastegate and dual Variable Valve Timing Control (VTC), the turbocharged Civic powerplant develops the horsepower and torque of a much larger engine. The powertrain has been developed under Honda’s exclusive EarthDreams Technology and has achieved an official fuel economy figure of 6.1L/100kms.
Three technologies contributing to the powerful and fuel efficient VTEC TURBO include:
1. Direct Injection System and High Tumble Intake Port
The DOHC VTEC TURBO employs direct injection technology to inject fuel directly into the cylinders, lowering the temperature within the cylinders by the petrol’s vaporisation heat. High tumble intake ports, which strengthen intake airflow, and tumble flow maintaining pistons allow fuel to be quickly and efficiently burned.
2. Dual VTC for Intake and Exhaust
The Variable Valve Timing Control (VTC) changes the timing for intake and exhaust valves to operate, controlling the amount of time both types of valves are simultaneously open, allowing efficient supercharging even at low engine revs.
3. Turbocharger with Electronic Wastegate
Using a turbocharger with electronic wastegate equipped with small diameter turbines that spin efficiently on a small amount of exhaust energy, results in a responsive turbo engine that rapidly responds to how the accelerator pedal is pressed.
The Civic SX Hatch model variants are powered by the 1.8L i-VTEC Engine and deliver 104kw at 6500rpm and 174Nm of torque at 4300rpm. This engine is also combined with the new CVT, built on EarthDreams Technology, and achieves 6.4L/100kms fuel economy rating.
The all new Honda Civic 5-door Hatch is available in four models variants and a choice of seven colours including:
Rallye Red, Brilliant Sporty Blue, Crystal Black, Modern Steel, Lunar Silver, White Orchid Pearl and a new colour to the range Sonic Grey Pearl, which is exclusive to the 5-door Hatch.
The all-new 2017 Civic 5-door Hatch is officially on sale from 10/6/17.
