On April 3, 2017, a Civic Type R lapped the 20.76-kilometre Nordschleife (north loop) in a record 7 minutes 43.80 seconds. This new benchmark time represents an improvement of nearly 7 seconds compared to the previous-generation (European market) Type R, and over 3 seconds faster than the previous FWD record. Video footage of the benchmark lap can be viewed at

The new Type R builds on Honda’s heritage of developing high performance Hatchbacks, and represents the ultimate expression of dynamic purity. Sharing the same fundamentals as the new Civic Hatch, the new Type R has been engineered from the ground up to deliver the most rewarding drive both on road and on the race track.

The Type R will feature a high performance 2.0L DOHC i-VTEC turbocharged powertrain, substantially upgraded body and chassis, and other track-ready, Nürburgring tuned and tested performance components.

"The Civic Type R caps off the incredible success story of our new 10th generation Civic lineup." said Nadine Bell, General Manager Marketing, Honda NZ. "We're happy to announce to our NZ enthusiasts that the long wait for the Type R attitude and performance is nearly over!"

2.0L DOHC i-VTEC TURBO Engine with 6-speed Manual Transmission
The 2.0L i-VTEC TURBO ‘heart’ of the multi-award winning previous generation Type R has been optimised and refined to produce impressive power and torque, making this the quickest, most agile Civic ever produced.

Throttle response and drivability have improved thanks to optimised engine control settings. The smooth and precise six-speed manual transmission is further improved by a rev match control system, ensuring no compromise in the Type R’s intimate connection with the driver.

A Stiffer Chassis & Revised Suspension
The new Type R takes the lighter, more rigid body shell of the new Civic 5-door Hatch and adds further use of adhesive in key areas. Compared to the previous Type R, torsional rigidity is further improved by 38%. The front MacPherson strut suspension of the Civic Hatch is revised with new geometry to minimise torque steer and maximise sports handling. At the rear, the new independent multi-link system of the Hatch is improved with the use of unique high rigidity suspension arms.

Enhanced Driving Modes
An enhanced selection of driving modes give the car greater usability and driver experience compared to the previous Type R. A new ‘Comfort’ setting sits alongside agile ‘Sport’ and the track-focused ‘+R’ modes. Each selection tailors the adaptive dampers, steering force, gear shift feeling and throttle response of the car on demand.

Refined Aerodynamics for High Speed Stability
The new Type R has a more comprehensive aerodynamic package, including a smoother underbody, front air curtain, a lightweight rear wing and vortex generators at the trailing edge of the roof line. The muscular, aggressive body has a best in class balance between lift and drag, contributing to greater high speed stability.

Advanced Safety and Driver Assistive Sensing Technology
Utilising Honda’s next generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure and the application of the Honda Sensing suite of advanced safety and driver assistive sensing technologies, the Type R targets the highest available collision safety ratings.

The Type R sees the addition of Honda’s Collision Mitigation Braking (CMBS) with Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keep Assist (LKAS), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), LaneWatch Camera and Auto High-Beam (AHB).

Produced in Europe, exported to major markets worldwide
The Type R destined for New Zealand this year, will be produced at Honda UK Manufacturing (HUM) in Swindon. The Type R produced at this facility, will be exported across Europe and to other markets around the world, including Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
The 2017 Civic Type R is available in four colours including Rallye Red, Crystal Black, Polished Metal and the heritage Type R colour, Championship White.
